A brief history of Gig Mill

Original Gig Mill Church

Gig Mill Church today
Gig Mill Methodist Church came into being in a series of prayer meetings held in the house of Mr. J. Jones, Glebe Street, during the autumn of 1882. Plans were drawn for a School-Chapel by Mr. Isaac Meachem, and on November 14th, 1884, 450 square yards of land in Glebe Lane were purchased for the sum of £33 15s. 0d., with the Chapel opening in the spring of 1885 at a total outlay of £250. The new Church and Sunday School proved to be so phenomenally popular that more land had to be purchased for building extensions in 1901 : but, following The Great War, the Trustees of the Church realised that the facilities were insufficient, and began to consider a further scheme for a new and up-to-date Church and premises. This time, funding of upwards of £500 was required, and on 22nd October 1932, the present Church and Sunday School premises were dedicated in a Stone Laying Ceremony.

And here we are, 80 years later !
